After closely monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic, it is with an abundance of respect and concern for the attendees, exhibitors, and sponsors of the 2020 Iowa Governor’s Conference on Public Health that the IPHA and IEHA Boards of Directors have made the decision to cancel this year’s conference. This was not an easy decision and our rationale is two-fold:

1.  The outbreaks in Iowa are already putting immeasurable added time and pressure on colleagues across the state. We expect the number of cases in Iowa to increase in the coming weeks, and it is of utmost importance that health departments and service providers have their staff on the front lines, ready and able to serve the public as we navigate COVID-19 in our state. Attending the Conference would take them away from the duties we are trained for and that Iowans need.

2.  It is critical that we protect the health of our public health workforce, and model proper strategies to flatten the curve and limit the spread of COVID-19 in our communities. While the spread of the virus may be inevitable, we all have our part to play to ensure local health systems are not overwhelmed during the course of the outbreak. In no way would we want to put your health at risk or contribute to the spread of COVID-19 in our communities.

While we will not be meeting in person, we value the time and talents of our presenters and are evaluating the logistics of alternative options for sharing conference content. More information will be sent as decisions are made.  


All refund requests will be honored. Information on how to request a refund will be sent next week.

Attendees can also consider donating a portion or all of their registration fees to IPHA/IEHA to ensure the success of IGCPH 2021. Each conference is seeded by carry-over funds from the previous year. With the cancellation of IGCPH 2020, the 2021 conference will be starting in the negative when the planning partners convene in June to begin planning. We appreciate your generosity and commitment to ensuring the high quality we’ve come to expect from the IGCPH. Details about how to request a refund and/or donate will be sent in a separate email next week.


If you have booked a hotel room, at the Holiday Inn or elsewhere, you are responsible for cancelling your reservation. Please do so without hesitation.


The Dare to Lead Pre-Conference Workshop will be rescheduled for fall 2020. The new date will be announced by the end of April. For those who have already signed up for this sold-out session, you may request a refund now or hold your registration until the new date is determined. Holding your registration will secure your spot for the fall session, as registrations will still be limited. If the new date does not work with your schedule, a refund can be requested at that time.


The IPHA Awards Reception at Jasper Winery will also be rescheduled for fall 2020, to coincide with the Dare to Lead workshop. The new date will be announced by the end of April. Tickets already purchased will be honored. If the new date does not work with your schedule, a refund can be requested at that time.
